The primary shape of this curving form was designed originally as a component in a bench. Constructed of 11 gauge weathering steel, bending and bringing the three surfaces into the singular complicated form was extremely difficult. It required lots of clamps and occasional application of heat. Once having succeeded, the sinuous form was too precious to continue making the bench. I then reworked the form into this composition. The stainless steel base implies a cold wave on which this sea creature rides. The name references the Marianas Trench and the unknown creatures that might be found in it’s depths. This piece resides at the home of a private collector in Portland, Oregon.
