I was inspired to make “Precarious” by the beauty of basalt columns and my imagination of their shifting and shearing with the active forces of the earth’s movement. In each column face I created positive and negative abstract forms. Balanced on the edge of a sloped surface, an egg reminds the viewer that in the shifting of forces and masses, life is precious and our position precarious. We are left to wonder if this egg, and the life form it contains, will fall, or remain precariously balanced.
